Southern IL Intake & Quarantine Facility
350 miles and a 5 hour and 50 minute drive south of the Wright-Way Rescue Adoption Center, the stories of the animals we offer for adoption begin.
The public's view of adoption is often far from the entire story of all that is involved in rescue work. The adorable puppy or kitten you meet at our boutique style adoption center didn't always have it so great. Our Intake and Quarantine facility, located in Murphysboro IL, faces the daily challenges of in taking animals from high-kill facilities and prepping them for adoption. It is not an easy chore, nor one that is always emotionally pleasant.
The challenges and rewards are what keep our dedicated staff going.
We visit several different animal control facilities weekly and choose animals for our program based on two factors: their adoptability and the urgency of the situation they are in. Very often we find ourselves in an entire room filled with young puppies and kittens that are scheduled for euthanasia. There is simply not enough time, not enough resources, and not enough adoptive homes for each. Leaving behind pets we know we could adopt out is the hardest part of rescue work.
Once an animal is chosen for our adoption program they are transported to our Intake & Quarantine facility, just 3 miles from the front doors of Southern IL University at Carbondale. Here puppies and kittens under 4 months are held for a set time period of 3 weeks and older pets are held for 10 days. They are screened for viruses, heartworms, rid of fleas/ticks, and started on a vaccination and deworming program. Good nutrition is a major part of their recovery. Spay and neuter surgeries are scheduled. Each pet is microchiped. A photograph of each pet is taken and put on petfinder.com in hopes that one day soon a family will see that pet and offer him or her a chance for a happy life. Our Intake and Quarantine facility is a happy place where animals can forget their past and look to the future.
The WWR Intake & Quarantine Facility offers our canine guests 3.5 acres of room to romp and play in. Future plans include a 1 acre fenced dog-park that will provide exercise and mental stimulation for our adult dogs and older puppies.
The 5000 square foot Intake and Quarantine facility recently completed a total renovation project in Januaury 2009. Our new facility offers dogs and puppies 32 cage less isolation suites where they can be treated for illness or injury, recover from their spay/neuter surgeries, and begin to enjoy the good life without posing a risk to other incoming pets. Our canine area is divided up into 5 separately ventilated areas providing the most advanced preventative measures in animal sheltering. Our cat wing offers cats spacious isolation cages and a rotation schedule for time to come out, stretch, and socialize with volunteers.
Traditional shelters intake pets and adopt them out from the same facility. By keeping incoming and adoptable pets separate, we can ensure that illness is diagnosed and the animal provided with treatment before ever being made available for adoption. The new WWR Intake and Quarantine facility also is designed to prevent the spread of illness from one pet to another through a strict isolation program. The animals receive plenty of daily attention from our staff and once sent to the WWR Adoption Center, don't mind the time they have invested in becoming healthy!
There is a completely separate building on our property where animals that require intensive care are housed. These pets may be recovering from an airborne illness like kennel cough, or being treated for a skin condition such as mange.
Wright-Way Rescue makes a commitment to each and every pet we take into our program. It's not always easy on a limited budget, however no matter no big or small their problem we work with them until they are ready for a home. We are fortunate to work with an amazing team of dedicated veterinarians who perform routine and "not so routine" treatment and care for our pets. Over the years we have treated many medical and behavioral issues that might have otherwise caused a pet to be considered unadoptable. We take pride in knowing that each pet receives the best care possible before being sent to the WWR Adoption Center.
We could not operate our Intake and Quarantine facility without our dedicated staffs who works countless hours for minimal pay, knowing that they are working together for a great cause. We employ skilled veterinary technicians, groomers, trainers, drivers, and office staff who all share the same goal... saving the lives of pets that would otherwise be euthanized. Without these people our rescue efforts would not be possible.
Visitors are welcome to visit our Intake and Quarantine Facility which is located at 8459 Old Hwy 13, Murphysboro IL 62966, from 12pm-5pm Monday through Friday. Closed holidays. Call (618) 208 1509 to reach our Intake and Quarantine Facility directly.
This is a WWR Exam room with direct access from outside and our front lobby. This is where pets are seen upon entering our facility. Vaccinations, wormings, weight/skin checks, heartworm and parvo screening, etc all happen in this room before the animal is assigned an isolation area within the building.
The kennels are WWR are quite roomy and provide dogs and puppies with adequate room to walk around and stretch out. Each suite has it's own drainage system and kennels can be hosed using a system that hangs from the ceiling, eliminating disease spread from hoses dragging the floor.
Four new additions to WWR enjoying their spacious suite.
The WWR Training and Rehabilitation room provides our staff trainer an indoor environment that dogs can be temperament tested and trained in. This space also provides volunteers with an large open area for wintertime play with our dogs and cats.
