Is Your Teen Cheating with ChatGPT? Understanding AI Detection in Schools

Several computers on a desk.

When it comes to our current stage in life, it’s no wonder that more and more students are cheating using ChatGPT. The technology is here and available for anyone to use. Teenagers have grown up in front of a computer screen, or a smartphone device, and so forth. These kids know how to use what and are up to par with the latest advanced technology.

While most teens may be aware of the tool that catches ai, they quite honestly may not care. Remember when you were a teenager and felt you were invincible? That’s the same stage that your teenager is in right now. They aren’t too sure that their parents or teachers are going to catch them cheating with ChatGPT because they haven’t been caught yet.

What are AI detectors?

AI detectors are tools that can catch AI usage in content, images, and sometimes video. The developers who created these tools that can detect AI-generated content were created to help offset the influx of fake content and misinformation online.

We are living in a world where artificial intelligence and human beings are cohabitating, at least in the digital environment, and that means we need tools to help protect us from the content we can’t determine to be AI-driven or human created.

These detectors will run an algorithm that helps them determine the likelihood of whether or not a piece of content was drafted by an AI writer like ChatGPT. It will then release a percentage back to the person to let them know the risks of the content being AI or not.

At this time, it is up to the person using the tool that detects AI to determine if the detector is accurate. This is going to be done on a case-by-case basis, as these detectors are not 100% accurate at all times. Each detector tool is starting to become more intelligent and accurate over time, but it’s imperative that teachers and parents use this as one part of the whole to determine if your teen is cheating using ChatGPT.

What is ChatGPT?

For those who are not familiar with ChatGPT, this is a piece of artificial intelligence that can do research, write content, develop poems, and even help with math problems. The system was developed by OpenAI and is one of the most popular AI content writing and research tools online.

This may be partly due to it being released to the public almost the longest out of each option, and the ease of use, along with the ability to utilize this program for free, or upgrade for just $20 per month. This program uses AI to scan the entire internet and can help with both essay writing, homework problems, and other things that teens want to use it for.

The best way to determine if your teen is using ChatGPT is to look into the AI detector tools. There are a few online tools that are popular right now, such as AI Detector, Winston AI, and GPTZero. Just take some time to review each of them and test them for accuracy. Once you’ve done that, you can choose one to be your go-to option to run your teen’s homework before they hand it in at school.

This may sound like another tedious step in parenthood, but it’s an important one. We are living in a digitally driven world, and this is the world that your teenager is growing up in and will be an adult in. One of your jobs is to teach the teens to be honest and do their work. While some teachers may allow ChatGPT for research purposes or other tasks, make certain the teen knows what the teacher expects and what the guidelines are for them while doing homework online.

This allows you to be up to date with what’s happening in your teenager’s life at school, how technology is playing a part in their ability to learn, and what guidelines you need to enforce when you’re overseeing homework time. Teens are at an age where they do need a level of trust and let go form their parents, but some parents are getting concerned that their teenagers are not learning enough because they are cheating with ChatGPT.

This detection option will allow teachers and parents to rest easier knowing that they are taking an effort towards keeping their teenagers from cheating using the easily accessible AI content creators that many of us have started to use online.

At the end of the day, ChatGPT is here to stay and it is quite a useful tool as are the AI detector tools, that’s why we must work together as parents and teachers to keep a close eye on how our teens are using ChatGPT to make sure that they are not cheating the system, and are learning something even while using their tech savvy skills.
