Renovate Or Move? 3 Questions That Will Help You Decide

Should you renovate your home or simply just move? It’s quite an expensive question, so you can’t afford to get the answer wrong.

But when you try to weigh up the pros and cons, you’re just not sure which side really is worse.

Renovation means you get to stay in a familiar place, in a home you may have a lot of sentimentality over, but you have to spend a lot of time and money on changing it.

Moving means you get to cut all ties, find somewhere new and fresh, but you might not have the energy (or time, or even funds) to try and start again.

But something has got to give here! And that’s what we’re here to help with. Should you renovate or should you move? The 3 questions below will likely help you to make a confident and definitive decision.

What’s the Problem?

So, why are you thinking about renovating or moving in the first place? Answering this question is how you’ll get to the heart of the issue!

Is the problem internal (like a lack of space) or external (like a bad neighborhood)? Along this same line, is the problem in or out of your control?

Internal problems can be easily solved by renovation, as can problems that fall within your sphere of influence. A lack of space or no storage can be fixed by adapting a room, installing bespoke cabinets, or having a clear out.

External issues that you don’t quite have any say in are better sorted by moving.

How Quickly Could You Sell?

Being able to sell quickly will tip the scales in favor of moving. So, double check how quickly houses have sold in the past within your neighborhood.

If the records show that most homes sell before the 6 to 8 month mark, you can take that as pretty good news.

If it’s longer, you might not be quite out of luck. After all, you could try the sell my house for cash way and get the sale over and done within a week.

However, you’ll need to thoroughly research the person and/or company offering you a quick sale. There are plenty of legitimate options out there, but homework is required!

How Much Time Do You Have?

And the final question that’ll ring the bell on whether you should renovate or move! When you think about it, how much time do you actually have to spare?

Could you afford to take a year or more? Or is this decision a little bit rushed based on your current schedule and/or what you’ve got in the bank?

If you can afford to take your time, moving will be more suitable. If you need to make a change ASAP, it’s better to renovate and actually let yourself get on with adapting your home to better suit your needs.

So, is it time for a renovation or to find somewhere new to live? Let’s make a decision!
